Our Leaders
Board Members have a tremendous responsibility. They are stewards of all aspects of Community Threads: management, finances, and quality; set strategic direction, build community relationships; establish ethical standards, values, and compliance; and more importantly it is their example that sets the tone for the membership. Often times their dedication alone inspires others.
Meet The Board
The Community Threads’ Board is composed of community leaders throughout the area that exemplify all of the qualities of great leaders. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the value each one of them provides to Community Threads and its members. Meeting frequently, they discuss strategic issues and determine the best allocation of limited resources. When a new “need” arises, they work with the growing Community Threads community to step up and provide for those individuals and families. Through the board and its members, Community Threads provides courage and a unique sense of empowerment to those individuals impacted by life changes as well as dignity and peace of mind to older adults. The Community Threads’ Board has shown their leadership and generosity by volunteering their time and numerous talents to stitch our community together, one thread at a time!
President, Pam
Pam has owned her own business for over 18 years and has extensive computer expertise. She has been involved with non-profit organizations for over 17 years. Enjoyed crocheting items for those in need in the community for approximately 5 years. She was instrumental in establishing a local chapter, setting up and maintaining the membership and coordinating with local organizations to match the items with the recipient needs. As the lead person of the group for 12 years, Pam also served on the board. She has been crocheting for over 64 years, enjoys creating new patterns and crocheting items for the community. She was one of the founding members of Community Threads.
Treasurer, Linda
Linda is a Certified Public Account with over 30 years’ experience. She has worked with many different nonprofit organizations. Her experience makes her very knowledgeable about non-profit accounting and taxes. She has been crocheting off and on for about 45 years. She loves to crochet afghans for all ages, scarves, hats, and other needed items. Linda was one of the founding members of Community Threads.
Secretary, Bertha
Bertha and her husband owned both a small local Grocery Store and Repo & Towing business for over 5 years! She also managed a satellite office for Repo Company business. She has been crocheting for over 53 years and sewing for over 50 years. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in both crocheting and sewing. She has been very involved in giving back to the community through her stitching for over 10 years. Bertha was one of the founding members of Community Threads.
King George Coordinator, Marcia
Marcia attended Parsons School of Design. She designed for J C Penny and Lerner’s, eventually starting her own children’s clothing company, White Winged Dove. Switching professions, she became a Professional Image Consultant focusing on design and color. Marcia has volunteered as a Domestic Violence Victim’s Advocate for over seven years. After the death of her mother, she was invited to join a local nonprofit and utilize her sewing skills to help the community. She has been an active member of Community Threads since the beginning.
Board Member, Doris
Doris was a teacher assistant for 11 years working with children that had behavior challenge as well as working in the cafeteria. She was also a Sunday School teacher for 15 years. Doris taught herself to crochet when she became a grandmother. She loves to crochet and sew and have been giving back to the community with the things she makes for at least 5 years. She says it is a blessing knowing when we are making the different items, we are passing the blessing onto someone else. She was one of the founding members of Community Threads.
Board Member, Ferne
Ferne has a variety of experience with non-profit organizations, most recently serving as the Volunteer Services Database Administrator for a multi-state hospice organization. Her professional background also includes over a decade in finance, serving as a secured credit officer for a major national bank and as a financial analyst and certified cash manager for a private, not-for-profit hospital. Her volunteer experience includes work with Laura Recovery Center in Texas; Care Initiatives Hospice in Iowa; Capital Caring Health in Washington, D.C.; the National MS Society in Iowa and Virginia, and From The Heart Stitchers in Virginia. Ferne took up knitting in 2015 and has recently learned to crochet a bit as well; she especially enjoys knitting baby sweaters and crocheting octopus comfort toys.
