Community Threads’ Story

Inspired to help their neighbors, founding members gathered in November of 2022 with one goal in mind, to serve the needs of their community by providing handcrafted and donated items of comfort, warmth, and dignity. From this group, Community Threads was born, providing over 6,368 handcrafted and donated clothing items for free to Virginia residents since its inception.

Members volunteer their time, hearts, and skills to crochet, knit, quilt, and sew handcrafted items such as hats, blankets, wheelchair totes, port pillows, dignity bibs, and more, along with new or gently used donated clothing and shoes; items are collected and distributed on a biweekly basis.

We serve individual families who lost their homes in a fire, shelters for those experiencing homelessness, rehabilitation, and health clinics, local schools, veterans groups, and more.

Our team of 100% volunteers are focused on putting the needs of the inclusive community first; as our group continues to expand, we strive to grow our impact to other organizations and geographical areas in stride.

Mission

Our mission is to serve the community by providing items of warmth, comfort, and dignity, handcrafted by our volunteers and clothing donated by our neighbors.

Our Values

More Than Just A Name

Names connect each of us to our own identity and have the ability to convey power, responsibility, and blessings.  The name for our nonprofit was carefully crafted just like our handcrafted items.  Each element from the words to the colors and images used have great significance and have been intricately woven together to strengthen the fabric of our communities.  We strive to put the needs of our community first while we provide a positive and lasting impact warming the hearts and bodies of our community.

The reason we are named Community Threads:

  • Community – the community of friends/volunteers coming together and the community we support thrbough our volunteer work.
  • Threads – the threads that tie the friends/volunteers together and the threads used to sew items, the yarn we knit or crochet with and the threads in the clothing we provide.

Our Leaders

Board Members have a tremendous responsibility. They are stewards of all aspects of Community Threads: management, finances, and quality; set strategic direction, build community relationships; establish ethical standards, values, and compliance; and more importantly it is their example that sets the tone for the membership. Often times their dedication alone inspires others.

Meet the Board

The Community Threads’ Board is composed of community leaders throughout the area that exemplify all of the qualities of great leaders. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the value each one of them provides to Community Threads and its members. Meeting frequently, they discuss strategic issues and determine the best allocation of limited resources. When a new “need” arises, they work with the growing Community Threads community to step up and provide for those individuals and families. Through the board and its members, Community Threads provides courage and a unique sense of empowerment to those individuals impacted by life changes as well as dignity and peace of mind to older adults. The Community Threads’ Board has shown their leadership and generosity by volunteering their time and numerous talents to stitch our community together, one thread at a time!
